A
second-floor remodel project, the Uptown Theatre features a foyer,
box office, lobby, soda fountain and an auditorium for an audience of
up to 18. The project is enlivened by a 17-foot high, computer-controlled
marquee, a night-sky fiber-optic auditorium ceiling, and Egyptian-flavored
Art Deco accents throughout. Acoustic treatment was extensive, yet consumed
very little space, typically reducing the room's usable footprint by less
than two inches per wall.
A/V playback components includes
the JBL Synthesis speaker system and Lexicon electronics. The project
is featured in a recent issue of Architectural Digest, as well
as Theo Kalomirakis' Private Theatres, published by Harry N. Abrams,
New York,1997. Theater design by Theo Kalomirakis Theatres, New York.

The Uptown Theatre's marquee greets
the visitor (above) with an animated play of color and motion on the second
floor landing in Larry Alan Kay's whimsical Southern California home.
The doors leading into the foyer (right) were fashioned from a bank grille
from the 1920s. The auditorium itself (below) seats 18, and features architectural
design by Theo Kalomirakis Theatres, A/V installation by Robert Eitel,
and acoustic design by Keith Yates Design Group.
